What is a White Americano?

White Americano is an espresso-based drink obtained by adding milk to the classic black Americano. The “White” in White Americano refers to adding steamed or heated milk to the classic Americano.

The White Americano offers a delightful combination of bold espresso, hot water’s lightness, and milk’s creamy sweetness. It is a popular choice for coffee lovers who enjoy the robustness of espresso but prefer a milder flavor with a touch of creaminess.

Finally, adding milk to the White Americano does not make it a latte. A latte is made by adding only steamed milk to espresso. In White Americano, both water and milk are added to the espresso. This difference means that a latte has a creamier texture and milder taste.

The White Americano strikes a balance between the strength of the espresso and the creaminess of the milk. It offers a richer coffee flavor than a Latte while providing a smooth and comforting mouthfeel from the milk.

How to Make White Americano?

To make White Americano, prepare an espresso shot and dilute it with water and milk. The espresso, water, and milk ratio can vary depending on personal preference and the coffee shop’s standard recipe. Some people may prefer more or less milk to adjust the coffee’s intensity and creaminess.

I’ll give you a starting point in this recipe and indicate the necessary tips to customize the recipe. Let’s now move on to the recipe.

Step 1) Prepare Your Espresso Shot

Prepare 1 shot (30 ml or 1 fl oz) of espresso for 1 cup (240 ml or 8 fl oz) of White Americano. You can prepare your espresso with an espresso machine, Nanopresso, or Nespresso machine. If you don’t have one of these, you may brew coffee with the intensity of espresso using a Moka pot or Aeropress.

Step 2) Add Hot Water

Add four times as much hot water to pour your espresso into a cup. You should use 120 ml (4 fl oz) of hot water for 1 shot of espresso.

Step 3 ) Add Milk

Add 1 or 2 times the amount of milk to the espresso you used in your cup. For 1 shot (30 ml or 1 fl oz) of espresso, add 30-60 ml (1-2 fl oz) of milk.

Heat the milk directly on the stove or use your espresso machine’s steam wand. This way, you can get frothier milk.

You can use any milk you enjoy drinking (whole, almond, soy, oat, etc.).

Serving Tips for White Americano

  • If you want to feel the strong taste of espresso more in your White Americano, use less milk. For a milder White Americano, use more milk.
  • If you want to drink your White Americano cold, you can follow the ratios in the recipe, but use cold water and cold milk instead of hot water. Then, you only need to serve your White Americano with plenty of ice.
  • You can add various syrups to make your White Americano sweeter or add some flavor. Vanilla and caramel syrups go very well with White Americano.

Summary

I saved something important to mention at the beginning for the end because I don’t want you to approach White Americano with prejudice. Adding milk to Americano is often seen as odd. However, I think it is worth trying.

As much as I love Black Americano, I sometimes find it too bitter to drink. For this reason, I sometimes like to add milk to my Americano.
