Iced Americano vs. Cold Brew: Decoding the Differences!

Last Updated on January 29, 2024 by Ibrahim Bat

Like in summer, having a hot coffee can be tough when it’s hot out. At these times, a cold coffee can be a great choice for your caffeine fix or just to cool off.

In the coffee guide section of Best Coffee at Home, we’re going to look at two popular cold coffees:

  1. Iced Americano
  2. Cold brew

First off, these two drinks are quite different. In this guide, I’ll help you understand which might be right for you.

Let’s start by explaining what Iced Americano and cold brew are.

What Exactly is an Iced Americano?

Iced Americano is a drink made with espresso, cold water, and ice.

The main difference from hot Americano is that it uses cold water and is served with ice.

Both hot and cold Americanos are easy to make. You can make them easily at home if you have a machine to make espresso shots (like an espresso machine, Nespresso, Nanopresso, etc.).

What exactly is Cold Brew Coffee?

Cold brew coffee steeps coarsely ground coffee at room temperature or refrigerated water for 12-24 hours.

Although the 12-24 hour steeping time may seem daunting, it is easy to make at home. Moreover, everyone has sufficient equipment in their kitchen to make a cold brew:

A mason jar, a French press, or just a glass bottle!

Any of these can be used for the brewing process. However, there are a few points to consider while brewing. If you’re interested in delving into the depths of the art of homemade cold brew with different techniques and equipment, we have two special recipes for you:

Differences in Brewing Methods of Iced Americano and Cold Brew

Homemade Iced Americano

Homemade Cold Brew

Requires espresso machine.

No machine is required.

The shot taken from an espresso machine is hot. That’s why it’s hot without any added water.

Room-temperature water is used for brewing.

It can be prepared in a few minutes.

It has a brewing time of 12-24 hours.

Note: Room temperature water is less effective than hot water in extracting coffee flavors. This is why cold brew coffee needs longer brewing times.

Iced Americano vs. Cold Brew: Difference in Appearance

The appearance of Iced Americano and cold brew coffee may seem the same at first glance. However, there are some subtle differences between them.

Iced Americano has a thin foam layer on top of the espresso shot. On the other hand, cold brew has no foam layer.

Another difference is related to the clarity of the coffee. Iced Americano has a cloudy appearance due to the espresso shot. On the other hand, cold brew coffee has a clear structure as it is filtered with a paper filter.

Note: Cold brew coffee is usually filtered with a paper filter. However, when filtered with a metal filter, it can have a cloudy appearance like Iced Americano. This is because metal filters cannot filter as effectively as paper filters. Therefore, the difference in clarity can be misleading at first glance.

Tips: If you like foamy coffee, the thickness of the foam in Iced Americano may not satisfy you. I highly recommend trying homemade Aerocano coffee for a frothier cold coffee experience.

What Tastes Better, Iced Americano or Cold Brew?

Iced Americano and cold brew coffee have quite different taste profiles. Giving a definitive answer to which one is better would be highly subjective. It depends on your personal palate preference.

However, to make it easier for you, I can describe the taste difference between them to some extent:

Iced Americano is actually made by diluting espresso shot with water and adding ice. Therefore, it resembles a slightly watered-down espresso in taste. However, it still has a strong and bitter flavor even after this dilution process.

On the other hand, cold brew coffee has a chocolaty and smooth taste with low acidity. This is because cold water is insufficient to bring out certain coffee acids. So, due to its low acidity, cold brew has a smoother taste compared to Americano. If you experience stomach problems like acid reflux, cold brew coffee might be a better choice.

In conclusion, Iced Americano has a bold and impactful taste, representing the traditional coffee flavor. On the other hand, cold brew is significantly smoother in taste compared to Iced Americano.

Iced Americano vs. Cold Brew: Which One Has More Caffeine?

Iced Americano generally has more caffeine than cold brew. However, many factors affect the caffeine content of beverages.

The caffeine content of a coffee can vary depending on many factors, such as the type of coffee used, the degree of roasting, coffee-water ratio, brewing time, and water temperature.

For this reason, it is impossible to give a clear caffeine content for cold brew coffee you brew at home. However, to be more inclusive, I can provide examples of Iced Americano and cold brew coffee caffeine content in Starbucks menus:

Caffeine Content By Size

Drink

Tall (12 fl oz.)

Grande (16 fl oz.)

Venti (24 fl oz.)

Iced Americano

150 mg

225 mg

300 mg

Cold Brew

155 mg

205 mg

310 mg

The table shows that the caffeine contents of iced Americano and cold brew coffee are quite close. The reason for the variation in the caffeine amount in iced Americano based on the sizes is the inconsistency in the espresso shot-water ratio.

  • Tall Iced Americano: 2 espresso shots (1 shot espresso in 6 fl oz iced Americano)
  • Grande Iced Americano: 3 espresso shots (1 shot espresso in 5.33 fl oz iced Americano)
  • Venti Iced Americano: 4 shots (1 shot espresso in 6 fl oz iced Americano)

On the other hand, you can change the caffeine levels of both iced Americano and cold brew by making a few adjustments at home. Adding more espresso shots to the iced Americano or brewing the cold brew for a longer period can obtain a beverage with higher caffeine content.

Iced Americano and Cold Brew Calorie Content

Both Iced Americano and cold brew coffee have almost zero calories. The things that make them calorie-containing are milk, sugar, sweeteners, coffee creamer, and syrups.

You consume a calorie-free beverage unless you add any of these to your drink.

Final Thoughts on Iced Americano vs. Cold Brew

I hope you can now easily distinguish the differences between iced Americano and cold brew coffee and decide which is more suitable for you based on your current preferences, whether you’re ordering or preparing them at home.

Both of them are truly delicious and refreshing coffees.

Since I consume coffee frequently daily, I usually prefer cold brew coffee. It’s easier and smoother and doesn’t strain my stomach too much.

On the other hand, when I want to have a strong cup of cold coffee, my first choice is iced Americano.

Before I go, I’d like to make one last suggestion. If you find iced Americano too bitter or cold brew coffee too mild after trying them, don’t worry. I have a fantastic alternative recipe for you:

I can position Japanese iced coffee in terms of strength between iced Americano and cold brew coffee. It’s definitely worth giving it a try.

So, which one do you consume more often?
