What is a blonde roast espresso?
A blonde roast espresso is made from coffee beans roasted for a shorter time, giving it a lighter color and a milder taste. It has a bit of a tangy flavor with hints of fruit or flowers, making it different from the stronger and richer taste of darker roasts.
Blonde Roast vs. Medium Roast
| Blonde Roast | Medium Roast | |
| Roast Level | Light | Medium |
| Roast Time | Shorter (just before first crack) | Longer (between first and second crack) |
| Bean Color | Light tan, matte | Light brown, slightly oily |
| Acidity | High (bright, citrusy, sometimes tangy) | Moderate (balanced, smooth, fruity notes) |
| Flavor Profile | Milder, tangy, fruity, floral, citrusy | Balanced, smooth, roasty, chocolatey, nutty, caramel notes |
| Caffeine Content | Slightly higher (short roast preserves caffeine) | Slightly lower (longer roast reduces caffeine) |
| Aroma | Light, vibrant, highlights bean’s natural notes | Richer, complex, balances bean and roasting aromas |
| Body | Light, delicate | Medium, fuller than blonde but not heavy |
| Best Choice For | People who prefer light, bright, and acidic coffee; those sensitive to bitterness | People who prefer a balanced and smoother coffee experience; versatile for different brewing methods |

Espresso with Wacaco Nanopresso Barista Kit
In this recipe, I used Starbucks Blonde Espresso Roast coffee beans.
For a quick espresso using the Wacaco Nanopresso Barista Kit, grind 10 grams of your favorite coffee beans to a fine espresso grind. Next, fill the larger coffee basket from the Barista Kit with the ground coffee. Attach this to the Nanopresso, incorporating the expanded water tank. Add about 5 ounces (150ml) of hot water into the tank. Finally, manually pump the device until you’ve extracted the desired volume of rich, flavorful espresso.
Ingredients
- 10g blonde espresso roast coffee beans
- Coffee grinder
- 5 oz hot water (150mL)
- Wacaco Nanopresso and Barista Kit
- Scale (optional)
- Thermometer (optional)
- Milk, sweetener or coffee creamer (optional)

Step 1) Grind Your Blonde Roast Beans
Grind 10 grams of blonde roast beans. Fill the Barista Kit’s larger coffee basket with the ground coffee.
Step 2) Tamp and Assemble
After measuring the coffee grounds with the provided scoop:
- Use the tamper for an even and consistent tamp.
- Assemble your Nanopresso with the Barista Kit, incorporating the larger water tank and the coffee basket filled with the tamped grounds.
- Add 5 oz of hot water to the Barista Kit’s water tank and complete the assembly of the device, preparing it for brewing.

Step 3) Brew Your Espresso with Nanopresso
Start the extraction process by unlocking the piston from its travel position and manually pumping the Nanopresso. The first few pumps will pre-infuse the coffee grounds, enabling them to bloom and enhancing the overall flavor. Keep pumping to increase the pressure required for the extraction process. You’ll notice resistance increase as the espresso begins to be extracted, signifying the brewing process is underway.

Enjoy Your Blonde Espresso
Enjoy your espresso right from the cup that comes with it or pour it into your favorite cup.
Keep in mind: Using the Nanopresso with the Barista Kit lets you make a bigger and stronger double shot of espresso. If you like, you can also make two smaller shots instead.
