Is Starbucks decaf really caffeine free?

Like all decaffeinated coffee, Starbucks decaf coffee is not completely caffeine-free, but it contains significantly less caffeine than its caffeinated counterparts. Decaffeination reduces the caffeine content to very low levels, but it does not eliminate caffeine. In comparison, the same serving size of regular coffee typically contains 70 to 140 milligrams of caffeine, depending on the blend and preparation method.

What is dark roast espresso?

Dark roast espresso is characterized by coffee beans that have been roasted at higher temperatures for longer, resulting in a dark brown color and often an oily surface. This roasting process imparts a bold, robust flavor profile with reduced acidity and enhanced bitterness, caramelized sweetness, and potentially chocolatey or smoky notes.

The intense flavor and rich oil content make dark roast beans particularly suited for espresso, producing a concentrated coffee with a creamy mouthfeel and a pronounced crema.

Despite a common misconception, dark roast coffee may contain slightly less caffeine than lighter roasts due to the degradation of caffeine during the roasting process. The preference for dark roast in espresso brewing is largely due to its ability to deliver a strong, richly flavored shot that pairs well with milk in espresso-based beverages.
