Aeropress Iced Coffee: Step By Step Recipe!

Last Updated on January 26, 2024 by Ibrahim Bat

You can brew iced coffee in minutes with your Aeropress. You don’t have to wait hours as you do with cold brew. Moreover, it’s quite easy to clean up after brewing. Therefore, Aeropress is a very useful coffee maker when I want cold coffee.

On the other hand, iced coffee, because it’s brewed hot and then cooled with ice, can sometimes give a weak cup of coffee taste. That’s because the ice melts quickly when it comes into contact with hot coffee, diluting it.

However, you will not encounter such a problem in the Aeropress method because we will use the technique used in Japanese iced coffee while brewing in the Aeropress. Thus, we will get a very strong and rich cup of coffee.

This article on Bestcoffeeathome.com will show you how to make iced coffee at home using an Aeropress.

In this recipe, we will follow the path of a delicious cup of joe by applying the strong side of Japanese iced coffee to the Aeropress.

Step By Step Guide: How to Make Aeropress Iced Coffee?

To brew iced coffee in an Aeropress, you only need to make a slightly modified version of your standard hot water brew using some ice.

So what kind of modifications? Let’s find out!

Step 1) Calculation

The ideal coffee-to-water ratio for Aeropress is 1:16. You should use 16 water units for every 1 unit of coffee grounds. To give an example from this brew, 400 ml (13.5 fl oz) of water should be used for 25 grams of coffee grounds.

We will use part of this water as hot water and part as ice cubes. This way, we will make a more concentrated brew to balance the dilution that ice cubes will make in the coffee.

Weigh 240 ml (8 fl oz) of the 400 ml (13.5 fl oz) water as hot water and 160 ml (5.5 fl oz) as ice cubes. 1 ml of water equals 1 gram. Therefore, you can go by weight rather than volume because measuring the volume of ice cubes will be quite difficult.

Step 2) Heat the Water

Considering the water you’ll use to preheat the Aeopress, heat the water to 200 °F (93.5 °C). If you don’t have a thermometer, boil the water. Then let it rest for 1 to 1.5 minutes. This way, you will achieve an ideal temperature for brewing.

Step 3) Prepare Your Aeropress

Place a paper filter in Aeropress’s filter cap and mount it to the brewing chamber.

If you wish, you can rinse the paper filter, but since Aeropress’s paper filter is quite small, even if you don’t rinse, you will not likely taste the paper in your coffee.

Step 4) Brew

Place the decanter on the scale. Put the ice cubes in the decanter. Then place the Aeropress on the decanter. First, pour the coffee grounds and hot water into the Aeropress.

Step 5) Stir and Wait

Stir the mixture gently with the Aeropress’s paddle for 30 seconds. Then place the plunger in the chamber and pull it up slightly. This will stop the water from dripping from the bottom.

Wait for 2 minutes to brew.

Step 6) Press the Plunger

Press the Aeropress’s plunger without applying too much force at a steady speed. Keep pushing until you hear a hissing sound. This sound means that the water inside is finished.

The ice in the decanter will probably have completely melted due to the effect of hot water. Serve with plenty of ice in the glasses. If you wish, you can serve it with milk.

Notes

Adjust Coffee-to-Water Ratio: Experiment with the coffee-to-water ratio to achieve the desired strength. Since the coffee will be poured over ice, a slightly stronger brew is recommended.
Flavor Enhancements: Customize your iced coffee by adding flavor enhancements like vanilla extract, simple syrup, or a splash of flavored creamer for a personalized touch.
Experiment with Milk Alternatives: If you enjoy creamy iced coffee, try using different milk alternatives like almond, coconut, or oat milk. These can add unique flavors to your beverage.
Sweeten Smartly: If you like your iced coffee sweetened, consider using liquid sweeteners like simple syrup. They dissolve easily in cold beverages.
Cold Coffee Ice Cubes: Freeze leftover coffee into ice cubes. Use these cubes in your iced coffee to prevent dilution and maintain the coffee's strength.
